Fillet welds are commonly used welds in steel structures, and the size of the weld seam has a significant impact on the quality of the steel structure. Therefore, in order to ensure the quality of the steel structure, the size of the weld seam should meet certain requirements. The following article will provide a detailed explanation for everyone. Let's take a look together, mainly including the following 5 aspects:
(1) The weld leg size hf (mm) of the fillet weld shall not be less than 1.5, and t (mm) is the thickness of the thicker weldment. However, for submerged arc automatic welding, the minimum weld leg size can be reduced by 1mm; For single sided fillet welds of T-shaped connections, an additional 1mm should be added. When the thickness of the weldment is equal to or less than 4mm, the minimum weld leg size should be the same as the size of the weldment.
(2) The size of the weld leg of a fillet weld should not be greater than 1.2 times the thickness of the thinner weldment (except for steel pipe structures). But the maximum leg size of the fillet weld at the edge of the plate (thickness t); When t ≤ 6mm, hf ≤ tc; When t>6mm, hf ≤ t - (1-2) mm. The size of the fillet weld leg inside a circular or slotted hole should not be greater than 1/3 of the diameter of the circular or slotted hole.
(3) The size of the two weld legs of a fillet weld is generally equal. When the thickness of the weldment differs significantly and the weld leg size cannot meet the requirements listed above, unequal weld leg sizes can be used. The weld leg edges in contact with thinner weldments and those in contact with thicker weldments should respectively meet the requirements listed above.
(4) The calculated length of side fillet welds or front fillet welds shall not be less than 8hf and 40mm.
(5) The calculated length of the side seam should not exceed 60hf. When it exceeds the above values, the excess part will not be considered in the calculation. If the internal force is distributed along the entire length of the side fillet weld, its calculated length is not subject to this limitation.
The requirements for the size of steel structure welds have been explained quite clearly in the text. Only by meeting these requirements can the overall quality of the product be improved, ensuring quality and safety in use. I hope the content explained in the article will be helpful to everyone and more convenient for their own operation in future use.
