Structural requirements for fillet weld of steel structural engineering:
1. Maximum calculated length of side fillet weld
The calculated length of the side fillet weld should not exceed 60 hf. When it exceeds the above values, the excess part will not be considered in the calculation. This is because the stress distribution of the side weld is uneven along the length, the two ends are larger than the middle, and the longer the weld, the greater the difference.
2. Minimum calculated length of fillet weld
The size of the weld leg of the fillet weld is large and the length is small, and the local heating of the weldment is severe. The defects caused by the arc striking and extinguishing of the weld are too close together, as well as other defects that may occur in the weld, making the weld unreliable.
3. Construction requirements for overlapping connections
The uneven distribution of stress in the component is caused by excessive bending due to stress transfer. To prevent excessive reduction in connection strength, the length of each side weld should not be less than the distance between the fillet welds on both sides.
4. Lap length requirements
In the lap joint connection, when only the front fillet weld is used, the lap length shall not be less than 5 times the smaller thickness of the welded part, nor less than 25mm, to avoid the weld being damaged due to the influence of eccentric bending moment.
5. Minimum weld leg size
The size of the welding leg should not be too small to ensure the minimum load-bearing capacity of the weld and prevent cracks from occurring in the weld due to rapid cooling. The specification stipulates that the weld leg size hf of fillet welds shall not be less than 1.5.
6. Maximum weld leg size
Except for the weld leg size hf of directly welded steel pipe structures, which should not be greater than 2 times the thickness of the branch pipe wall, hf should not be greater than 1.2 times the thickness of the thinner weldment.
